Fluidstack to Build Europe's Largest AI Supercomputer

Europe is set to get its largest AI-dedicated supercomputer, thanks to a partnership between cloud platform Fluidstack and high-density data center specialist Eclairion, in support of French startup Mistral AI. They announced plans to build a massive GPU cluster in Bruyères-le-Châtel, France (40 km south of Paris) to bolster the country’s AI computing capabilities. The supercomputer is designed to scale beyond 18,000 GPUs — an unprecedented size in Europe — and will run entirely on decarbonized energy (drawing from France’s nuclear and renewable power mix). This means an enormous amount of compute power will be available with a minimal carbon footprint, putting France at the forefront of eco-conscious AI infrastructure.

Boosting AI sovereignty with a gigawatt ambition

This project is a major milestone for European AI sovereignty. By hosting cutting-edge infrastructure on French soil, it helps Europe reduce reliance on foreign cloud providers and keep AI research local. The initiative aligns with Fluidstack’s broader plan to invest €10 billion in a 1-gigawatt AI cluster in France. The Mistral AI supercomputer will be deployed in phases, with the first segment targeted to go online by summer 2025 and expansions to follow. It will provide state-of-the-art resources for training large AI models and fostering innovation, giving European companies and researchers access to world-class computing power. With support from the French government (the project was highlighted by President Macron at an AI summit), Fluidstack’s endeavor solidifies France’s position as a leading hub for AI development on the global stage. And with over 18,000 GPUs in the mix, this future compute behemoth is sure to draw attention far beyond France’s borders.
