Popular tech reviewer Marques Brownlee (MKBHD) offered a first look at Samsung’s upcoming mixed reality headset — an ambitious device built to compete with Apple’s Vision Pro. In his hands-on video, MKBHD reveals that Samsung’s XR headset features extremely high-resolution displays that make visuals exceptionally crisp and lifelike. The device’s design is notably sleek and refined; it already looks like a polished consumer product rather than a rough prototype. Samsung has partnered with Google to run a custom Android XR operating system on the headset, meaning it will leverage a familiar Android ecosystem tailored for augmented and virtual reality experiences.

Packed with tech to take on Vision Pro

The Samsung headset (code-named “Project Moohan”) is filled with cutting-edge technology. It uses ultra-thin “pancake” lenses and automatic interpupillary distance adjustment to fit each user perfectly. Outward-facing cameras provide full-color passthrough video, enabling augmented reality features similar to the Vision Pro. MKBHD also noted that the device is comfortable to wear and is powered by a new high-end Qualcomm chipset (based on the latest Snapdragon XR2) to drive its graphics — essentially the equivalent of a flagship smartphone’s internals dedicated to XR. While Samsung plans to release this XR headset to developers first in 2025 (and not immediately to consumers), the early impressions suggest it could become a strong rival to Apple’s device. With Samsung’s hardware prowess, Google’s software expertise, and Android’s open ecosystem combined, this upcoming headset signals a serious entry into the high-end XR arena. It should help drive competition and innovation in the space, to the benefit of users who will soon have multiple advanced headsets to choose from.
