Epic Games has announced that Unreal Engine 5.4 introduces experimental support for Apple’s Vision Pro headset, marking an important step for developers interested in creating experiences for Apple’s new “spatial computing” device. This initial support focuses on the Vision Pro’s Full Immersion mode, meaning developers can start building fully virtual reality scenes that take over the user’s entire field of view. In practical terms, developers using Unreal Engine can now begin to test their VR projects on visionOS (Apple’s operating system for Vision Pro) with this 5.4 release.

Early days, but a significant move

The integration is currently at an experimental stage, so some features and optimizations are not yet available or perfect. Epic acknowledges that there are many challenges still to overcome, and that Vision Pro support isn’t as mature as the engine’s support for other platforms just yet. For example, only full VR experiences are supported at this stage, and not “mixed” experiences blending virtual content with the real world. However, the move is still significant: Unreal Engine is a popular choice for high-fidelity game and simulation development, and even partial Vision Pro compatibility makes it a viable alternative to Unity for developing apps on the headset. Epic Games has stated that they plan to improve and expand Vision Pro capabilities in future Unreal updates. For developers and content creators, this means more freedom to choose their preferred engine and, potentially, the arrival of visually stunning content in the Vision Pro ecosystem as the platform matures. In short, while everything isn’t perfect yet, Unreal devotees have cause to celebrate: they can start imagining virtual worlds on Vision Pro without completely changing their toolkit.
