Apple’s groundbreaking spatial computing device, the Apple Vision Pro, finally has a release date for the United States. Apple announced that it will begin taking pre-orders for the Vision Pro on January 19, 2024, with the device set to arrive in select U.S. Apple Stores on February 2, 2024. This marks the first time the general public will be able to purchase and experience the Vision Pro, which was first unveiled at WWDC 2023 and has since generated immense excitement.

An unprecedented experience at $3,499

The Vision Pro is priced at $3,499 and offers a blend of virtual reality and augmented reality capabilities through Apple’s new visionOS operating system. Apple is positioning it not just as a headset, but as a “spatial computing” platform that could revolutionize how we interact with digital content. From day one, those who get their hands on the Vision Pro can immerse themselves in 3D movies, enjoy virtually infinite screen real estate for work, make FaceTime calls with people appearing life-size, and use a host of apps designed specifically for the device. In short, the Vision Pro promises to redefine personal computing by projecting our apps and content all around us instead of confining them to a flat display.

Gradual rollout and in-store demos

Initially, availability will be limited to the U.S. Apple Stores and Apple’s online store in the U.S. Apple has said that other countries will follow later in 2024 as production ramps up. By opening pre-orders in January for a February launch, Apple is giving developers and early adopters a concrete timeline to prepare for. As the February 2 date approaches, Apple Stores in major cities are expected to offer demos by appointment so that customers can try the Vision Pro’s mixed-reality experience before buying (and receive guidance for the headset’s optimal fit). The countdown is on for what Apple describes as the start of a new era in personal computing — and to see if the (virtual) reality lives up to the hype.
